Know Your Resources: Transportation to Treatment
For many people and families living with cancer, getting to and from cancer treatment and related appointments can add significant logistical and financial stress. Below are some considerations to assist with transportation barriers.
For Local Support
Consider asking to speak with a social worker or case manager at your cancer treatment facility to learn about any programs specific to your center. Some centers offer free or reduced parking or may have travel funds available to assist with the financial costs of getting to/from treatment. They will also know of any local nonprofits offering gas cards or assistance with transportation costs.
Helping Hand | CancerCare allows for a zip code search for resources including transportation.
If you have a network of supporters, consider asking for rides. You can use a tool such as Care Calendar Website | Lotsa Helping Hands to set up a care calendar to coordinate requests.
Explore your insurance benefits. Some health insurance plans offer financial support for transportation.
Some cancer foundations have financial assistance programs and/or offer gas cards or support to assist with travel costs.
